How to Incorporate Exercise Into Your Busy Schedule

Last week we discussed a few tips on how to remain active throughout the day, and today we’ll be giving you few tips on how to incorporate exercise into your busy schedule.

Ideally, a person should exercise 30-45 minutes a day, 5 times a week. Any activity which raises your heart rate in the range of 60 % – 85% of your maximum heart rate (MHR) for a long period of time will be considered as exercise. Your MHR is calculated by subtracting your age from 220. There are several apps or online calculators available to calculate the ideal targeted heart rate during exercise.

Before I dive into the tips, I want to strongly recommend that you consult with your doctor if you have any health conditions or injuries before starting to exercise. Also, start slow and increase the intensity if you are new to exercise so that your body gets used to it. A proper warm-up, stretching, and cool-down routine must be incorporated in your exercise plans. If you plan to lift weights, start small and get help from professionals to learn the techniques so that you do not end up with an injury.

Here are a few tips on how to incorporate exercise into your busy schedule:

  1. If you do not have 30-45 minutes at one stretch, take out 15-20 minutes in the morning and 15 – 20 minutes in the evening to exercise. When I started, I decided to wake up 30 minutes early.

  2. Keep the end in mind. It is easy to get bored with exercise and we end up procrastinating because we don’t see immediate results. Hence keep your eye on the prize. Identify your why. Your health is important so always keep in mind that you are doing this for better health or to improve the quality of your life.

  3. Develop self-love. A person who has developed this quality will never compromise with healthy habits.

  4. Bring a variety into your exercise routine. We might get bored due to a lack of variety. Hence be open to trying out different options. This way you will also ensure that your body is not getting used to the same routine. Different types of exercises like swimming, Zomba, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), strength training, cardio, yoga, jogging, and brisk walking can be incorporated into your routine.

  5. You don’t need an expensive gym membership or expensive exercise gear/machines to start exercising. You can buy a few weights and start at home. There are various YouTube videos on the techniques.

These were some tips on how to incorporate exercise into your busy schedule. Start small, keep it simple, stay consistent. Once the habit is formed, it will become easy to keep it up.
